Common Witch-Hazel, Hamamelis virginiana



Habitat: Mesic soils in mixed hardwood forests--common. Rocky slopes, ravines, along trails, and edges.

Characteristics: Witch-hazel is usually 10 to 15 feet tall, although taller trees (ca. 30 feet) are occasionally encountered. The diameter of the trunk ranges between 2-6 inches and the leaves are 3 to 5 inches long. Witch-hazel blooms in late autumn (and winter) and has tiny yellow blossoms.
