Sweetgum, Liquidambar styraciflua



Habitat: Prefers moist soils and is found in mixed hardwood forests. Often used as an ornamental tree for its striking autumn colors.

Characteristics: This tree is easily distinguished by its star-shaped leaves and the long-stemmed, prickly hanging fruits. Sweetgum attains a height of 50-120 feet and the trunk may have a diameter of 3-4 feet. The leaves are 5-8 inches long and turn a brilliant reddish-purple in the autumn.
