Habitat: Woods and wood edges, especially in poor soils.
Characteristics: Usually a small tree but may grow as high as 100
feet. Leaves may be of 3 different forms, even on one tree. The leaves
are spicy and fragrant when crushed and turn scarlet in the autumn.
