Black Locust, Robinia pseudoacacia



Habitat: A pioneer tree of dry woods, meadows, pastures, and open woods.

Characteristics: Very thorny tree attaining a height of 70-80 feet and having a diameter of 2-3 feet. Flowers are white, fragrant, and hang in clusters. Leaflets occur in groups of 6-20. The individual leaves are small, egg-shaped. Related species are often used as ornamentals in the urban environment. Black Locust has very strong wood, often used in fenceposts.
