Habitat: An understory tree that prefers dry (xeric) soils and is typically found on slopes and ridges.

Characteristics: A small tree that typically is 20-30 feet in height, though, it may attain a height of 60 feet. The trunk is 1 foot or less in diameter. A tree with very strong, durable wood; also known as ironwood.
