Characteristics: The eastern hemlock attains a height of 60-70 feet, although taller trees are often found, especially in virgin forest stands. The trunks of mature trees are 2-3 feet in diameter and the needles are 5/16-9/16 inches long. The cones are among the smallest of our evergreen trees, only 5/8"-1" long. In the eastern U. S. hemlock is threatened by the Hemlock wooly adelgid.
