Habitat: Forests, meadows, and thickets. There are many species and therefore, hawthorns are seemingly ubiquitous. In some areas hawthorns form impenetrable thickets.
Characteristics: Most hawthorns have long thorns (>1-1/4") although, there are a few species that are thornless. The fruits resemble very small apples (3/8"-1/2" diameter) and are yellow to red in color when mature.
