
Characteristics: Trees may attain a height of 80 feet and taller; the diameter ranges from 1-2 feet. The buds are slightly more than 1/4" long and the leaves are from 4 to 7 inches long. American elm flowers between March and May. A popular shade / ornamental tree at one time, now is seldom found in urban landscapes because of Dutch elm disease (Ceratocystis ulmi ) which is transmitted by the bark beetles Scolytus multistriatus  and Hylurgopinus rufipes.
