Mountain Ash, Sorbus americana



Habitat: Woods and clearings. At the higher elevations in southwestern Virginia, it is commonly seen near ridgetops.

Characteristics: Often seen growing as either a moderate-sized shrub or tall tree and attaining a height of 40-50 feet. This species and its cultivars are often grown as ornamental trees for their striking autumn colors and red fruits. The fruits remain on the tree for some time and are eaten by many animals.
