Calendar of Events in the Gypsy Moth Life Cycle

F. William Ravlin

The calendar below shows the approximate time when different stages of the gypsy moth will occur. Because temperature, not calendar days, determines how fast insects develop times will be different for different geographic areas. For example, northern areas and high elevations will be cooler and therefore egg hatch will occur later in the spring than southern areas and low elevations. The dates presented here relate to Virginia conditions and will not necessarily apply to other states.

The calendar also shows when different management activities should take place. Egg mass counting should be done during the fall and winter but can be done in early spring, burlap banding must occur when older caterpillars are present, and spray programs should occur while caterpillars are young and more susceptible to insecticides.
